It Will Be Okay

As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a
flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with
Jesus. . .. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to
him.”
Luke 9:29,30,35

It is fun to watch little children explore and discover their world. As they are having fun at a
park, they venture further away from mom or dad. They run up ahead as they begin to gain
confidence. Children will push the boundaries and grow bolder. They will do all of this until
finally, something scares them; a loud noise or a scary-looking dog, and suddenly those children
come running back wanting to know, “Is it all going to be okay?”

Jesus’ disciples were growing in their faith and role as his followers. They had listened to
Jesus’ teachings and had witnessed his miracles and were growing bold in their faith, but the
greatest challenge still lay ahead. Jesus had been speaking to them about his death in Jerusalem—
how he would suffer and die at the hands of the people.

God provided a way for the disciples to look back and know that this was according to God’s plan,
and it was all going to be okay. Right before he went to Jerusalem to suffer and die, he went up a
mountain, and his face shone with all the brightness of God, and he appeared with two great prophets
from long ago, Moses and Elijah. Jesus did this so that the disciples would have the boldness and
confidence to continue their mission, even as they were about to face this great challenge in Jerusalem.

God does the same for you. As you carry out your God-given mission and as you live your life in
service, there are scary and challenging moments. However, God invites you to look to him and know
that it is all going to be okay. He is still your perfect heavenly Father, and he is still in control of all
things for you. Find new confidence in who God is and what he does for you.

Jesus, when I face challenges and am frightened, cause me to look to you and find new confidence. Amen.
